Italian authorities are investigating Meta, which controls Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, for tax evasion of 870 million euros.
These are checks carried out by the Italian Financial Police Guardia di Finanza and which focus on the time period from 2015 to 2021.
According to the Italian press, the entire investigation concerns the non-payment of value added tax on user registrations on social media. These registrations – as you know – are free, but each user agrees to provide the company with their various personal details.
Which can then be a valuable reference point for the sale of a product line and for many advertising campaigns. The investigation was initiated by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office but fell under the jurisdiction of the Italian co-capital’s judiciary.

Meta responded through its representative that it “pays all taxes due to it in all countries in which it operates” and added that it “strongly disagrees with the idea that the entry of users to online platforms should be subject to the payment of value added tax” .
However, he emphasized that he is going to offer his full cooperation to the judicial authorities.
