Call of Duty is the latest game to detect and block XIM cheaters

Activision is cracking down on cheating in Call of Duty: Warzone and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II that occurs with external third-party hardware.

Devices such as the XIM, Cronus Zen and ReaSnow S1 have been widely used in Call of Duty to allow mouse and keyboard users to have the benefits of aim assist and reduced recoil from the controller combined with the movement benefits of the mouse and keyboard. Activision has now updated its Ricochet anti-cheat system to detect and eventually suspend or ban gamer accounts using this hardware.

These devices act as a passthrough for controllers on PC and consoles, and when used improperly or maliciously, can provide a player with the ability to gain an unfair advantage in the game, such as reducing or eliminating recoil,” explains the Richochet team in a post today on the official blog.

Ricochet’s anti-cheat system will initially display a warning to players it has detected using this hardware. “Continued inappropriate use of these devices may result in additional warnings, partial feature limitation, account suspension, or banning of the offending account across all Call of Duty titles, according to company policy,” the Richochet team said.

Activision’s move comes just weeks after Ubisoft announced it would begin cracking down on Rainbow Six Siege gamers who cheat using XIMs or similar devices to spoof controller inputs. Players who steal in Rainbow Six Siege using devices like the above will notice higher input latency which will cause them serious trouble in aiming.

Disconnecting the devices will return the latency to normal. Epic Games has been moving forward with permanent bans on gamers using Cronus Zen and Cronus Max since last year, but cheaters have found ways to bypass Epic’s detection system.

Epic Games, Ubisoft and Activision are now in a constant game of cat and mouse with the developers of this hardware which is designed to be undetectable and the gaming industry has not found the perfect solution to combat these devices.
