Meta has announced a comprehensive update to its privacy policies, focusing on protecting teens and minors from sensitive content related to violence, eating disorders, and self-harm, on both Instagram and Facebook.
The company aims to roll out these new protections gradually, with all teen users automatically enrolled in the enhanced privacy settings, categorized as “Sensitive Content Control” on Instagram and “Reduce” on Facebook. New accounts for users under 18 will also be subject to these content restrictions without the ability to opt out. In addition to restricting specific content, teens will receive regular prompts suggesting additional privacy settings.
Enabling these recommendations will automatically limit who can repost the minor’s content and tag or reference other users’ posts. Search results related to self-harm, eating disorders, and suicide will be hidden from teens and replaced by expert resources, such as contact helplines and recommendations from professionals outside of Meta.

These measures are part of Meta’s commitment to address the impact of sensitive content on the mental wellbeing of young users.
