OpenAI introduces a major upgrade to ChatGPT with the new Tasks feature, which is available from today to Plus, Team and Pro subscribers. This new feature turns the chatbot into a more traditional digital assistant, similar to Google Assistant or Siri, but with ChatGPT’s advanced language capabilities.
The Tasks feature allows users to define what they need and when they need it. As The Verge reports, users can request daily weather reports at 7 a.m., reminders for their passports to expire, or even bedtime stories for their children. To use the feature, subscribers must select “4o with scheduled tasks” in the ChatGPT module selector.
The system can also suggest proactive tasks based on conversations, although users must explicitly approve any suggestions. Bloomberg reports that OpenAI also plans to release “Operator,” an autonomous AI agent that will be able to control computers independently.

In addition, the researcher Tibor Blaho discovered that the company is working on a project with the code name “Caterpillar”, which could be integrated with Tasks.
Tasks can be managed either directly in chat threads or via the new Tasks section in the profile menu, which is only available via the web. Users can have up to 10 active tasks at the same time, and will receive notifications for their completion on web, desktop and mobile.
OpenAI has not specified when or if the feature will be available for free users, suggesting that Tasks may remain as a premium feature to justify the ChatGPT subscription cost, which ranges from $20 to $200 per month.
Although programmability is common among digital assistants, this addition marks a significant change in the functionality of ChatGPT, which until now only operated in real time.
