Very few people know the origin of the legendary Nokia ringtone. Although the controversy is currently focused between mainly two opposing camps, Nokia once swept everything in its path with its devices leaving their own indelible mark on the history of mobile phones and the ring tone along with it.

A tiktoker, Alexandra Whittingham (guitarist), recently reminded her online followers of the origins of that iconic Nokia ringtone. Whittingham is a professional guitarist who studied at London’s Royal Academy of Music and regularly posts videos of her music to her TikTok followers In particular, the ringtone comes from a solo of a song by Francisco Tárrega called Gran Vals (1902).

Nokia was looking for a sound, free from expensive copyrights.

The EU law made the music available to the public 70 years after the composer’s death. Tarrega, who had died 84 years earlier, was an ideal choice.

It is worth noting that it was first heard in 1992, in an advertisement for the Nokia 1011 smartphone.
