Meta has started testing its new Instagram user age verification tool in even more countries, several months after beta testing the three verification options we saw last summer.
For those who don’t remember, users were able to either upload their ID, ask friends to vouch for their age, or take a video selfie. In case a user tried to edit the date of birth on Instagram to change it from under 18 to over 18, then the message was displayed to choose a verification method.
Trials began last year in June in the US and expanded to Brazil and Japan in October. Several countries in Europe, Mexico, Canada, South Korea, and Australia are now entering the equation, and Meta’s goal is to see the certification tools worldwide in the coming months. The certification is done by posting the identity card or passport or driver’s license.
In case you choose this method, Instagram will keep the certification document on its servers for 30 days and then delete it permanently.
Those who choose the video selfie, the shot will be given to Yoti, a startup from London that certifies the user’s age with the help of a specially trained Artificial Intelligence algorithm. Once the certification is complete, both Instagram and Yoti automatically delete the selfie video, or so they claim.
The third option is the certification with the help of your friends.
Those vouching for you must be at least 18 years of age and not acting as a guarantor for another user at the same time.
You choose three friends – guarantors, who receive a relevant notification and have 3 days to respond.
They are given various age groups (under 13 years, 13-17 years, 18-20 years, 21+ years, not sure) and for the age verification to complete successfully all 3 must choose the same age group club.
According to Meta, since Instagram’s age verification tests began they have succeeded in stopping 96% of teenagers attempting to change their date of birth on their accounts.
