Outlook is now available for free in Apple’s App Store, and users no longer need a Microsoft 365 subscription or an Office license to use it. It’s a surprise move that coincides with Microsoft’s push to expand the use of its flagship Windows email client to other platforms.
Outlook for Mac includes support for Outlook.com, Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo accounts, and any email provider that supports IMAP. Microsoft redesigned the Mac app in 2020, with a user interface optimized for the latest design changes brought by Apple’s macOS.
Outlook for Mac is also optimized for the M1 and M2 chips and features a macOS widget for calendar entries and native notification center support. Outlook for Mac still supports handoff with iOS, so the user can pick up where they left off between iOS and Mac devices

. Microsoft will also soon add a peek option to the menu bar to quickly see calendar entries inside the main Outlook for Mac application. The leading software company also plans to support Apple’s Focus experience with new Outlook profiles coming soon.
Microsoft’s move to make Outlook for Mac free comes just as the company is in the midst of revamping its Outlook app on Windows. Microsoft has been testing a new web-based version of Outlook for (almost) a year now, with plans to combine the Windows Mail app and Outlook for Windows into a single email client.
The new “One Outlook” app is essentially the Outlook.com as a Progressive Web App (PWA). Like Outlook for Mac, the new client will be free like Windows Mail, and will support a variety of email providers.

Microsoft appears to be preparing to similarly revamp its Outlook app for Mac. There’s more to do and many more features we’re excited to bring to the Outlook for Mac experience, says Microsoft’s Jeremy Perdue.
We’re building Outlook for Mac from the ground up to be faster, more reliable, and an Outlook for everyone.
