Tesla: Older vehicles will pay to be CCS compatible

Tesla has revealed the cost of retrofitting older Tesla models to be compatible with the CCS adapter and access other charging stations.

Over the past twelve months, Tesla has been actively expanding its Supercharger network across North America to include EVs from other companies.

Ever since this came to light, Tesla owners have been concerned about the extra congestion it could create at Supercharger stations. In addition, the situation is extremely one-sided, as owners of Tesla cars cannot benefit from public charging stations that do not have CCS connections.

In 2020, Tesla made a groundbreaking announcement that it would release the CCS1 adapter – however it was initially only available in South Korea. It is not clear why this decision was made, but it certainly left many people confused.
After two years of waiting, the company finally introduced the $250 CCS adapter to North America – and it was worth the wait!

Unfortunately, the adapter wasn’t an option for all Tesla owners. If your Tesla car was built before October 2020, the onboard charging ECU is not compatible with the new adapter and will need to be retrofitted to work properly.

When launching its adapter last year, the automaker promised an easy retrofit in 2023, with no confirmation on pricing.

Unfortunately, Tesla has included a hefty retrofit fee. Last week, Tesla generously reduced the cost of the adapter to $175, a price that will help many. Unfortunately, though, those with cars older than October 2020 have to pay double to order both the adapter and the new charging ECU – a total of $450.

Tesla’s CCS, (Combination Charging System) is a type of fast charging technology that allows EVs to charge quickly. This system uses both AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current) power sources to recharge an EV’s battery in just 30 minutes.

It also has an attached cable that can be used to plug into any standard household outlet or public charging station. This means that wherever you are, you’ll always have access to a fast charging option.
