Universal Studios Japan has announced the expansion of Super Nintendo World with the opening of the new Donkey Kong Country themed area on December 11, 2024.
Legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto detailed the new zone’s features in a special Nintendo Direct. Visitors will be transported from the Mushroom Kingdom through a huge tunnel into a lush jungle, faithfully representing the aesthetic of Donkey Kong games from the past 40 years. The area includes Donkey Kong’s home and a Funky Kong-inspired shop.
The main attraction of the new area is the Golden Temple, a roller coaster inspired by the famous mine cart levels of the Donkey Kong Country games. The train’s innovative technology simulates off-track jumps and track changes, using a secondary, hidden track for ultimate safety.
Guests will be able to participate in various mini-games throughout the area, including a rhythm game inspired by Donkey Konga. With Super Nintendo World’s special NFC wristbands, guests will collect hidden letters throughout the park. The dining experience includes themed dishes such as ice cream sundaes inspired by DK barrels and specially designed hot dogs, offering a complete experience for guests.
Entertainment industry analysts believe the expansion will further strengthen the partnership between Universal and Nintendo, attracting new audiences to the theme parks. The success of the original Super Nintendo World led to the decision to expand, with Universal investing in the development of innovative technologies for its attractions. Universal representatives emphasize that the new area will offer a unique experience that combines the classic fun of amusement parks with modern technology and the beloved brand of video games. Donkey Kong Country will also be included in Universal’s Epic Universe in Orlando, scheduled to open on May 22, 2025.
However, it will not be added to the “condensed” version of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood. Additionally, Universal plans to introduce new interactive elements and seasonal events to the Donkey Kong Country area throughout the year.
