In the Android world, Samsung is the best OEM when it comes to software support commitments.
The company offers four Android upgrades and five years of security updates for most of its devices – including mid-range.
This commitment is a better commitment than what Google provides on Pixel phones. However, even Samsung can’t compete with Fairphone. The company in question has issued the final update for the Fairphone 2, which was launched way back in 2015.
When it debuted, the phone featured Android 5 Lollipop. It reached the end of its life with Android 10, after 7 years and receiving 43 updates. Obviously, Android 10 is far behind the current stable version of the OS, which is Android 13.
However, the Fairphone 2 has received a steady stream of security updates and remains safe to use and compatible with most apps on Google Play Store. However, since this update is the last one to receive, Fairphone advises caution to those who decide to continue using it after May 2023. Fairphone had originally committed to “three to five years” of support for the Fairphone 2.
This means that not only did it initially commit to longer support than any other major manufacturer, it exceeded its initial commitment.
All of this makes a lot of sense when one considers the easily repairable, ethically sourced, and environmentally friendly nature of the company’s phones. These entail long software support.
