The Wi-Fi Alliance has introduced Wi-Fi 7, heralding a new era of faster transfer speeds and reduced latency, especially beneficial for devices like Apple’s Vision Pro. Compared to the current Wi-Fi 6E standard, which includes support for the 6GHz band, Wi-Fi 7 has notable improvements. Wi-Fi 7 provides a maximum transfer speed of up to 46Gbps, a significant jump from Wi-Fi 6E’s 9Gbps, making it five times faster.
In areas where the wireless network has access to the 6GHz band, 7 doubles the channel size, accommodating more traffic and minimizing interference. The introduction of 4K QAM improves transmission efficiency, enabling a 20% increase in data transmission compared to the existing 1024 QAM used in Wi-Fi 6E. Wi-Fi Alliance President and CEO Kevin Robinson emphasized that Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7 marks the next generation of Wi-Fi, offering faster adoption due to faster speeds, improved performance and increased reliability.
While it may take some time for smartphones to support this new standard, analysts expect the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max to be among the first Apple devices to incorporate Wi-Fi 7 in 2024. However, according to what has become known, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will support Wi-Fi 7, which will give it the title of the first smartphone, and possibly the first device because the Vision Pro is released on February 2nd, that is certified to support the new template.
