After one cancellation and two fairly mediocre MWCs at the mercy of the COVID19 pandemic, the most important conference in telecommunications is back in full force this year with a lot of important announcements, speeches and…eyes to the future.
Among the concepts that stood out were the rollable implementations of Lenovo / motorola, with the company demonstrating the motorola Rizr and a prototype ThinkBook, which we had the opportunity to see and photograph up close during our tour of MWC 2023, but unfortunately we didn’t manage to get our hands on them.
The representatives of the companies were sparing in revealing more detailed information about the two concepts, but they emphasized the fact that both are proof that devices with rollable screens can be relatively soon on the market.
As for the laptop, we can say that it looks no different from the company’s classic ThinkBooks, but everything changes with the flip of a switch on its right side.
The switch activates the mechanism that expands the screen from 12.7” (aspect ratio 4:3, resolution 2024 x 1604) to 15.3” (ratio 8:9, resolution 2024 x 2368) in about 10 seconds without fading in the process. In terms of durability, Lenovo says it’s aiming for Sharp’s rollable panel to last 20,000 to 30,000 moves, which seems small compared to the 200,000+ folds promised by foldable smartphone makers, but clearly this particular use isn’t as common as that of the smartphone.
Not to mention weight, battery life, price and release schedule, so for now we’re clearly treating it as a concept that may one day find its way onto store shelves in other guises.

As far as the motorola Rizr is concerned, the logic behind the design is to have a small smartphone in your pocket and hand that can expand its screen if you really need a larger size.
The specific concept starts from 5” (ratio 15:9) and reaches 6.5” (ratio 22:9) with a double press of the power button on the right side. Impressive to the eye, but we will hardly see something like this in the near future, both from Lenovo and from other companies.
We said, MWC 2023 and in general all major exhibitions – conferences are offered for the presentation of future technologies.
