Apple has recently been forced to make changes and statements by the European Union. We recently learned the number of active devices for Europe. Now, through the first transparency report published by the company, we also learn the number of applications in the App Store, as the company until today did not give the numbers, except when it wanted to use them for marketing purposes.
The main purpose of the report is to provide statistics on app approvals and the number of rejections. Together we learn the number of customers and developers whose accounts were activated, as well as the number of applications downloaded from the App Store. The 2022 figures report 1,783,232 apps in the App Store, while 6,101,913 applications were reviewed, of which 1,679,694 were rejected. According to Apple, 186,195 apps were removed from the App Store last year.
This happened for a number of reasons, including violations of local laws or App Store policy, as well as fraud. Specifically, 38,883 games were removed, which was also the most popular category in the App Store, with apps that were deleted.
We also learn that 1,474 apps were removed at the request of the US Government, with the company stating that everything was done after the intervention of a judge. 97% of these applications originated in China. Searches for 2022 reached 373,211,396, which is quite a large number as it shows the weekly user interest in new apps. So, the applications in the App Store are just under 2 million, in contrast to the Google Play Store which in March 2023, had 2,673,292 applications.

In fact, the Google Play Store had reached 3,600,000 applications in 2016, but then Google also started deleting applications for various reasons, similar to Apple.
