Bluesky, the alternative proposal to Twitter – from the co-founder of the latter Jack Dorsey – is now available in the form of a closed beta version in the App Store for iOS devices.
The invite-only app will soon join the crowded field of budding Twitter competitors, which includes Mastodon. Those interested in using Jack Dorsey’s new social media can submit their email address to join the waiting list.
The Bluesky app borrows heavily from Twitter but also has some different elements such as the ‘What’s up?’ in place of “What’s happening?” while the process of creating a post – which can also include images – is particularly simplified, as nothing more is needed than selecting the “+” button. Of course, it includes familiar features like searching, following users, and viewing their posts on the “Home” timeline.
Bluesky started in 2019 as a side venture of Jack Dorsey and was funded by Twitter itself. When the initiative began, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, then CEO, saw Bluesky as a more “open” alternative to an increasingly centralized Twitter. Bluesky was then spun off from Twitter and began operating independently as a company in 2021. Jack Dorsey believes that social media should be free from corporate or government control and that only those who post content should have the power to remove it.
Additionally, while he has admitted that Twitter’s decision to remove Donald Trump from the platform after he was accused of inciting the Jan. 6 riots and storming the Capitol was “the right decision,” he expressed concern that it set a precedent that sets endangering the “free and open global internet”.
Whether current Twitter users will flock to Bluesky in large enough numbers to make a significant difference to the platform remains to be seen. Considering, however, that there are not a few who are looking for an alternative solution – as they are of the opinion that the current CEO and Owner Elon Musk embraces far-right figures and far-right ideology – we do not find it unreasonable for them to proceed with the transition.
