Microsoft and Ninja Theory announced that Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 will be released only in digital format on May 21, 2024. Priced at $50, the game will be available from day one for Xbox Game Pass subscribers.
The head of the studio Dom Matthews explained that the choice of release exclusively in digital format gave the creators more freedom to create an experience adapted to the duration of the story (estimated at around 7 hours) and at the same time set a lower selling price. This energy “repelled the narrow focus on providing a unique journey to the unique world of Senua”. Matthews proudly mentions how Ninja Theory pioneered “independent games” with the first Hellblade in 2017, achieving top-level production while maintaining its creative independence.
Now, with the support of Microsoft, the studio has an even greater opportunity to push the boundaries with the new game. Although the original Hellblade was also released in digital form, there was a physical version after its release. However, Microsoft fully embraces the digital future to optimize the flexibility and accessibility of gamers. Senua’s Saga is coming to be added to other important releases in 2024, such as Like a Dragon Gaiden and Alan Wake 2 which have been announced to be released exclusively as digital exclusives, indicative of this direction.
With an exclusive digital release, Microsoft and Ninja Theory can create a more streamlined game while also passing significant savings to fans at launch. This also expands the potential audience through Xbox Game Pass. It’s a bold step aligned with the digital transformation of gaming.
The announcement of the two companies took place during the Xbox Developer Direct 2024 which you can watch below.
