Google has released its Gemini app for iPhone, offering instant access to the company’s AI chatbot via voice commands and text.
Google’s new Gemini app hit the App Store worldwide this week, marking a major expansion in the accessibility of the company’s artificial intelligence. The free app offers a simple and direct interface to communicate with the chatbot.
The app reportedly features a chat window and a list of past chat history. Users can interact with Gemini using text, voice or their phone’s camera. The functionality is identical to that offered by the Gemini module in the main Google app or on the Gemini website.
A major new feature is access to Gemini Live, ChatGPT’s more interactive voice-like chat mode. Gemini Live, which has been available on Android for a few weeks, is now appearing on iPhone for the first time on both Dynamic Island and the lock screen. Google is aiming to make Gemini easy to access through the icon on the home screen and the ability to assign it to the Action Button or other quick access points on the phone.

The company points out that users can start a conversation with the bot in a tap and a half of a second. However, like other chatbots outside of Siri, Gemini has limitations on the iPhone. It cannot change settings or access other applications. However, it has the advantage of interfacing with other Google apps, such as YouTube Music and Google Maps, offering a first glimpse of the future of interactivity on mobile phones.
