Once again HP is facing backlash from users as compatible inks stopped working after a recent firmware update.
HP’s customer service department, for its part, justifies the move, stating that it imposes the measures in question to ensure that the printer can connect to the electronic circuits and chips contained in the inks. According to the company, these measures help it maintain the integrity of its printing systems and of course protect its intellectual property.
However, users feel cheated as affordable compatible inks that worked flawlessly one day stopped working the next. There have been numerous lawsuits against HP in many countries around the world, such as the US, Italy and Australia for these shady business practices.
The case in the US is typical, where in a lawsuit filed in 2020, it accused the company of blocking users from third-party inks and toners and forcing them to buy expensive genuine HP inks. Despite paying millions to settle the cases, the profits from the strategy seem to far outweigh the fines for continuing it.
Typical is the case of a user on Reddit where he publishes the message that the printer now displays, essentially rendering cheap inks and toners useless, with the service department replying that this is due to a recent firmware update of all printers. So before you buy a non-HP ink, the company recommends making sure it will work with the printer.
Or you can simply buy a printer from another company that won’t make your life difficult. HP have updated their printers to outright ban ‘non-HP’ ink! They no longer show the “can’t guarantee quality” message, but instead cancel your print completely until you insert an HP ink cartridge. After contacting HP, they advised “this is due to the recent ‘update’ of all printers” from asshole design
