The time when water, and liquids in general, were a major threat to smartphones seems to be gradually passing into history. Users are no longer afraid of liquid damage to their phone, according to “Good Hands People”.
Memories of shielding phones from raindrops have given way to a new landscape, with Allstate Protection Plans research highlighting the shift in user concerns about water damage. Surprisingly, the number one fear of smartphone users, accounting for 34% of responses, is now a damaged screen.
With 45% of users spending more than 5 hours daily on their phone screen, the emphasis on screen protection is evident, perhaps why 27% choose to have it repaired quickly. Water damage, despite losing its place in the top five, still ranks sixth at 10%. Connectivity issues come in second at 19%, highlighting the key role seamless connectivity plays in a smartphone’s functionality.
Touchscreen malfunctions (13%), broken corners and sides (11%) and charging issues (also 11%) round out the top five. The fact that water damage is no longer one of the top five concerns of smartphone users may be because it is not covered under warranty. The survey also reveals a common underestimation of phone repair costs, with 47% believing repairs cost $150 or less.

In fact, a screen replacement on an iPhone 15 that is not covered by warranty, or the owner does not pay AppleCare, is as high as $279, highlighting the financial impact of maintaining our beloved devices. Despite the widespread use of cases, 50% of phones in cases were damaged in 2022, raising questions about the effectiveness of modern phone protection.
