In a particularly funny development, an AI granny was created whose purpose is to answer calls from scammers and whose goal is to keep them on the line as long as possible, so that they waste time from their actual attacks.
It looks like phone scammers have found their master, in the form of AI Grandma. UK operator O2 commissioned an artificial intelligence team to create a chatty and sweet old lady as a response to scammers. The AI bot will answer calls made from numbers known to come from scammers. If the unlucky scammer stumbles upon the AI granny, then the bot will talk to him for hours while he tries to extract information from a non-existent person.
As you can see in the demo video above, the AI granny can chat scammers to death and is even ready to use some fake bank accounts to keep the caller busy for “almost an hour”.
Scammers operating through phone calls are now commonplace and it’s only a matter of time before they get a loved one, especially an older one. There are so many examples of elderly people being duped into believing something terrible has happened to a loved one in order to send some money, so any effort by providers to minimize these incidents is greatly appreciated.
Many of the scammers pretend to be from the police, from our bank or from a hospital where a loved one has gone and urgently needs money to save himself. There are not a few times when older people step on it and lose huge sums of money. Several times, in fact, someone passes by the house and collects the money or they send an unsuspecting taxi to pick up the package.
AI has many useless uses, such as making videos of kittens and politicians. But this usage seems quite useful and will make life difficult for scammers, so we agree! O2’s “AI Scambaiters” project comes as living virtual proof that AI can also be a force for good, and it’s just a matter of who uses it and to what end.
