Google announced today that it plans to update Google Maps to reflect President Trump’s executive order to change names.
According to an official announcement from Google today, the company is preparing to make significant changes to Google Maps in response to President Trump’s executive order of January 20. The changes involve renaming the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America” and Denali to “Mount McKinley.
As the company said via the X platform, the new names will appear on maps once the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is updated. Google clarified that it “follows a long-standing practice of implementing name changes when they have been updated in official government sources.
The U.S. Department of the Interior announced last week that it plans to follow the executive order to implement the name changes. Specifically, the Department said on Friday that the U.S. Board on Geographic Names is working to update the official federal nomenclature immediately.

It is worth noting that Google clarified that in cases where names differ between countries, Maps users see the official local name, while the rest of the world sees both names. This practice will be applied in this case as well. Regarding Denali, it is important to note that it bore the name Mount McKinley until 2015, when its last name change took place.
As for Apple, a company representative was not immediately available when asked by The Verge to comment on the company’s plans regarding Apple Maps and the upcoming name changes.
