Elon Musk had announced that he would start charging X users to be able to post, and now the implementation is starting on a trial basis. Users will be charged $1 per year to post content on the platform. The new “Not a Bot” program is initially launched in New Zealand and the Philippines and in theory aims to prevent bots from using the platform. “This new test was developed to strengthen our already important efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of our platform and bot activity.
This will evaluate a potentially powerful measure that will help us fight bots and spammers on X,” the platform wrote in a help center post explaining the experiment.
Existing users of the platform will not be affected by the tests for now. If the tests are successful, we might see the metro rolling out to all users. This will result in X becoming a paid social networking service. New accounts on the platform will need to verify their phone. They will then be given a choice of three packages. $1 Not A Bot, X Premium and Verified Organization.

Users who choose the first package will be able to do specific things in X, such as uploading content, replying, reposting and bookmarking posts. Users who do not subscribe will only be able to view posts, without the ability to upload their own content or respond to what they read. Pretty extreme treatment from X, as on other platforms we’ve seen other implementations that worked that didn’t require user payment.
Such as the confirmation of the user with his mobile phone and the possibility of a single account per mobile number.
