AMD has announced the next generation of desktop graphics cards. The company unveiled two new flagships, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and the RX 7900 XT. Based on the new RDNA 3 architecture, AMD’s new 7000 series GPU is the world’s first to feature a chiplet-based design. The GPU die has two main components, the Graphics Compute Die or GCD and the Memory Cache Die or MCD. The GCD is manufactured using the new 5nm manufacturing process, while the MCD uses the older 6nm process. The move to a chiplet-based design allows AMD to mix and match components for different configurations. It also allows her to use different production processes for each part. Smaller parts also have better yields than building a large monolithic mold, which helps the company manufacture these parts cheaply and efficiently. Looking at the new GCD, it features the new RDNA 3 compute units, new rendering engine, and a new dual media engine. Each compute unit features 1.5x VGPR (Vector General Purpose Register), 64 dual-version stream processors with 2x instruction rate, 2x AI accelerators with 2.7x performance, and a 2nd generation RT accelerator with 50% more performance per CU. The new MCD features a 64-bit memory controller and 2nd generation Infinity Cache for 2.7x maximum memory bandwidth. Now coming to the cards, the RX 7900 XTX has 96 compute units, clocked at 2.3GHz, 24GB of 384-bit GDDR6 memory with 96MB of Infinity Cache, and a board power limit of 355W that can be powered by two 8-pin sockets. Meanwhile, the 7900 XT features 84 compute units, a 2.0GHz clock, 20GB of 320-bit GDDR6 memory with 80MB of Infinity Cache, and a 300W board power limit. Both cards support the new DisplayPort 2.1 standard limited to UHBR 13.5 intermediate bandwidth of 54Gbps, as well as a new multimedia engine with simultaneous encoding / decoding for AVC / HEVC and 8K60 AV1 encoding / decoding. AMD had presented few benchmarks this time. The Radeon RX 7900 XTX is claimed to be up to 1.7x faster in pure rasterization and up to 1.6x faster in ray tracing at 4K compared to the 6950 XT. The company did not compare the 7900 XT to the competition. The 7900 XTX is priced at $999 and the 7900 XT at $899. They will be available on December 13th.
