YouTube launched a new artificial intelligence tool to deal with copyright issues in users’ videos. The updated “Erase Song” tool allows you to remove copyrighted music while preserving other audio elements such as dialogue and sound effects.

The announcement was made by the CEO of YouTube, Neal Mohan, through the platform X (formerly Twitter) on July 4. Mohan presented a video explaining the options available to resolve copyright issues and showing how to use the new tool. Previously, creators had limited options when dealing with music copyright issues on their videos. They could either completely mute the sound in the section that contained the protected music or remove the section completely. Both solutions often negatively affected the quality and meaning of the video.

The new tool uses artificial intelligence to accurately identify and remove protected music, without affecting other audio elements. YouTube said the feature had been in testing for some time, but its release was delayed due to accuracy issues.

Although the tool greatly simplifies the process of dealing with copyright issues, YouTube points out that it may not always be effective. In cases where removing the song is difficult, the platform recommends the creators to use alternative editing methods, such as trimming the problematic part or muting the audio at that point.

The introduction of the “Erase Song” tool is an important development for YouTube content creators, as it offers a more flexible and less invasive solution to copyright problems, without being perfect.
