Samsung’s future foldable smartphones, including the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, may feature more durable internal screens. The company seems to be targeting the new screens as “Ironflex”.
Samsung filed an application for the registration of the Ironflex trademark with the Korean Copyright Information Service (KIPRIS) on January 3. The documents describe a “foldable OLED screen panel” for products that include not only “foldable smart phones” but also “foldable tablet computers” and “foldable portable video projection screens.” Samsung’s foldable panels got off to a rough start five years ago when the original Galaxy Fold debuted.
In many units there was a problem with the internal screen, partly due to a misunderstanding about the built-in screen protector. This led to the release of the phone. Since then, Samsung has done everything in its power to improve both the durability of its foldable panels and the public image associated with this emerging technology. The latest models, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5, are miles ahead of the originals that were released almost half a decade ago, but even so, many potential buyers seem reluctant to join the foldable smartphone market.

What exactly does “Ironflex” offer in comparison with other technologies of retractable screens, we will learn theoretically soon. However, the name captures an extremely durable foldable screen that could boost consumer confidence in foldable devices. Given the timing, there is a high probability that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 will be the first Samsung devices to feature Ironflex. The upcoming foldable is expected to debut this summer.
Until then, Samsung will introduce the Galaxy S24 on January 17, while various Galaxy A series devices will follow.
